Even as the Indian economy remains in doldrums and the employment scenario in the country looks shaky at best, there are a small percentage of Indian students who are happy beyond expression. They have received what you can typically call “dream packages” with some of the best companies in the world. A few days back, the newspapers reported that twelve students from IIT Kanpur were offered packages in excess of Rs. 1 crore per annum by international giants such as Oracle, Google, Tower Research and others. Three students from IIT Madras were hired by Google at Rs. 93 lakhs per annum. For a student who just graduates from college, receiving such a magnificent package is almost surreal. However, several foreign companies seem to be convinced that Indian students are worth it. So, the question that now arises is this – what makes Indian students seem so good to foreign companies? A combination of skill and work ethics Indian students who are being paid high have established themselves of being worthy of it. Skills and talent alone dictates the pay packages. Also, the fact that the Indians are an excellent combination of skills and strong work ethics works in favour of fresh graduates. Companies realise that they get a complete package when they hire an Indian graduate. Graduates from some of the top colleges of the country manage to get there through sheer hard work and brilliance. They are willing to go that extra mile to get the job done. Employers understand that such talent is an asset for the company and worth taking on board at high pay packages. If you notice, only the top brains of the country manage to bag such high salary packages. The average salary earned by a fresh graduate in India is between Rs. 2.75 lakhs and Rs. 3.5 lakhs per annum. Is it a big deal for foreign companies? A package of Rs. 1 crore is huge when you look at it from the Indian perspective. But let us look at it from the point of view of one of the big foreign companies. For company based in the United States such as Google, Rs. 1 crore converts to around $163,000. A programmer in Google working in the United States makes around $250,000 per year, after a few years of working in the company. So, skilled fresh graduates can receive anywhere between $150,000 and $200,000, which is what brilliant Indian students are being paid. So, from Google’s point of view, the big pay package is actually the normal pay package that the company offers its employees. It is, however, a matter of pride that the Indian workforce is finally being seen on par with the international workforce in terms of receiving pay packages. In the past, there was a vast difference between the salaries earned by an Indian and a foreigner working in the same position. The fact that foreign employers are now regarding fresh Indian graduates as being worth paying high salaries is a major achievement indeed.
